Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church of Horseshoe Bend, AR celebrated 50 years of God’s Grace during the Divine service on Sunday, July 21st. It was the exact same date in 1974 the Rev. Ralph Bird, the newly called Pastor at Peace Lutheran Church, conducted the first service at the Lion’s Den (now Abbeys Dog Park) with 75 people in attendance . The name Shepherd of the Hills was selected.
Following the special 50th anniversary service was a fellowship time where members, former members and guests visited and viewed photos and news articles of the congregation’s mission and ministry during the past 50 years. An abundant and delicious meal was catered by Papa Dick’s from Crown Lake Resort in Horseshoe Bend and was enjoyed by about 40 people who stayed after the service.
During the congregation’s pastoral vacancy, the congregation is being served by Rev. William Schutte of Mountain Home and Rev. David Tews, former Pastor of Shepherd of the Hills and officiant at the 50th anniversary celebration service. As the congregation seeks the Lord’s guidance for a new pastor it continues to share the message of God’s unearned and undeserved love and forgiveness in Jesus Christ in Word and Deed.
