In late September, Trinity Lutheran Church in downtown Memphis hosted its first ever Festival of Hymns. With the title “God’s Wonders Still Unfold,” the afternoon of music featured vocal talents from a number of churches across Memphis. Organized by Trinity members and musicians Martha Israel and Jean Schmidt, the unique event celebrated not only the rich musical heritage of the Lutheran Church, but also the variety of music that has come from other Christian and ethnic traditions. Choir, instrumentalists, organ, piano, and the congregation joined together in hymns, both old and new. About 70 people came out to enjoy the afternoon of hymns. “It was a grand and glorious hour praising God,” expressed Martha Israel. She said they were very encouraged by attendance for this first festival – and they hope to host an even larger crowd next year!
